Android 17 for Samsung Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus : Release and Features

Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus are the flagship devices from Samsung, released in 2023. The South Korean tech giant launched these flagships with pre-installed Android 13 OS and upgraded to Android 16, One UI 8 recently. The next major update for these flagships is Android 17.

Google began the beta testing of Android 17 in mid-February an rolledout the Beta 2 of Android 17 to the Pixel device owners on 26th February. Many bug like UI instability, random freeze and restarts have been fixed in the Beta 2.

Later, the third beta arrived for the beta testers on second beta on March 26th, 2026. The Beta 3 is a remarkable one in the development of Android 17, since system achieved stability and also many new refinements came. The last scheduled beta in the development of Android 17 or Beta 4 came on April 16th, 2026. The search giant even released a exceptional bug fix update with the version number Beta 4.1 on June 2nd, 2026.

Finally, the Search giant completed the development of the seventeenth iteration of Android with the release of Android 17 officially on June 16th. The rollout for Google’s own Pixel series has begun and in progress.

Samsung has begun the making of One UI 9 or Android 17 for its devices in May, 2026 with the release of Beta 1. At the beginning only, S26 flagship is eligible for the beta program of One UI 9, later they have included S25 series too. Based on current leaks, it seems that Samsung is testing internally the One UI 9 firmware with version S911BXXUAGZF9 for S23.

The One UI 9 update is coming with many remarkable features like Expressive Material design, new camera features and improvements.

Android 17 Exclusive Features

The Android 17 update contains so many interesting and useful features like AI based app controls, revamped app bubbles with better functionality and more efficient memory management.

The Material 3 Expressive design is one of the key features in Android 17, which improves interaction with UI. So Galaxy S23 users can use app bubbles, notification removal features more effectively after updating to One UI 9.

Apart from many visual and performance improvements, Android 17 also offers great security refinements like Advanced Protection Mode. The security feature protects users from sophisticated attacks by implementing security configurations.

Samsung improved the dex mode a lot in the latest android beta. The feature also came to stock android 17, since Google added the native support for desktop mode in Android. Samsung also added new functionality to the Dex mode, so that users can move the windows easily between multiple desktops. After updating to One UI 9, users can preview their app windows simply through recent apps button in the desktop mode.

Samsung Notes with Tape

The South Korean tech giant added additional features to the Notes app. In the new Notes app, users can find new tools and brushes. In One UI 9 Notes app, users can utilize a feature named as Tape using which some part or the text can be taped/hidden. Whenever required, users can remove the Tape, so that the hidden text will be visible again. The feature is very useful for the students preparing for exams, according to reviewers installed One UI 9.

App Bubbles for every app

The App Bubbles feature is a very valuable feature that came originally with Android 11 OS. At that time they were only available for messaging apps like Whatsapp only. However, in the latest Android 17 update, Google made Bubbles available for all the apps.

In this feature, the apps opened, appear in the bar at the bottom of the screen, from which the user can switch between different bubbles. Keeping background the required app in the background, the user can put any app opened in small window. So that the user can interact with both windows simultaneously and also switch between different apps in the bubbles bar quickly.

Galaxy S23 users can even resize, move the app bubbles for all the apps after updating to Android 17. The users can multitask with ease using the bubbles feature in situations like navigating through Maps app and checking sports.

Quick settings toggles is another area where we can find big changes in the One UI 9. Samsung has revamped the entire look of Quick settings by redesigning the all toggles. Users can modify the size, location of the icons, media player and new toggles. Volume controls also got separated for assistant and media in the latest android version.

The One UI 9 update also includes some Camera, Media improvements and Versatile Video Coding (VVC) support.

Android 17 Release date for Galaxy S23 and S23 Plus :

The Search giant accelerated the development of the seventeenth iteration of Android, so that the final version might hit the Google Pixel devices in early-June, as per the previous reports. As predicted, the official rollout of Android 17 has begun on June 17th.

Earlier, Samsung took nearly 4-6 months to begin the rollout of Android 16 after its initial release, for S23 series devices. This time, the tech company has begin soak testing of Android 17 very soon even before the final release. So S23 users can taste the One UI 9 update beta in late-June or July 2026 and final rollout may start in Q3 of 2026 atleast in some regions. The rollout is expected to be completed by the end of 2026 through out the globe.

The Samsung S23 Plus users can taste the early One UI 9 or Android 17 beta in early-July, as per the latest reports. Samsung added a few A series devices like A56 to the testing list of One UI 9, in late-June, however, S23 series is still yet to be in the testing devices list.
